Many homeowners choose to install light-colored tiles in their shower because they help create an environment that's both welcoming and relaxing. It can be very difficult, however, to maintain their pristine appearance. Not only do the shower's tiles and grout lines have to be cleaned regularly, they also need to be sealed to ensure they're protected from harmful external agents. This is especially true for grout. If not properly sealed, discolored grout will overshadow the elegance of any light-colored surface, no matter how beautiful it is.

That's exactly what led our most recent customer to hire our grout sealing services in Ambler, PA. She had a wonderful bathroom that was entirely covered with cream-colored tiles. Unfortunately, the grout around the tiles had become deteriorated over the years and ruined the overall appearance of the shower enclosure. She tried to restore the fixtures on her own, but her attempts only helped her realize she needed professional help. She searched online for a reputable hard surface restoration company and found our website. After reading about our services and watching a few video testimonials from satisfied customers, she called to schedule a free in-home consultation.

We visited the customer's home on the scheduled day to assess the shower. Just like the client had described, the shower's grout had deteriorated to the point where no domestic cleaning method could have restored it. According to the homeowner, the grout lines hadn't been sealed in a long time. This explained why the fixtures looked the way they did. Some of them had also broken apart, causing some of the tiles to come loose. This allowed water to seep beneath the tiles. Had this issue been left unattended, it would've resulted in severe water damage and costly repairs.

Unsealed grout is extremely hard to maintain in showers. While it's true this cement-based mixture is strong enough to hold the tiles together, its porous composition makes it vulnerable to water and humid environments. A high-quality sealant helps prevent these problems by keeping water and other substances from seeping into their porous structure.

We also learned that during the past month, the client had used harsh cleaners in a desperate attempt to clean the grout lines. She explained that the products she had initially bought had proved unsuccessful for cleaning the grout, so she tried stronger cleaning solutions. Sadly, her attempts had done nothing more than further deteriorate the fixtures. She had even observed how the state of the grout lines rapidly declined over time. They only became darker and easier to break apart.

Even though the shower's fixtures had fallen victim to improper maintenance, we knew exactly what to do to reverse the damage. We offered the client a thorough grout cleaning and sealing procedure. We would also replace the damaged grout before applying our proprietary sealant ColorSeal to the grout lines. Feeling relieved because she had finally found a solution to her problem, the homeowner agreed to the service.

We returned to the client's home on the appointed day to perform the service. We began by cleaning the shower's surfaces. To do this, we soaked the shower's surfaces with Sir Grout's Natural Hard Surface Cleaner. This is a pH-neutral cleaner that's safe for both tile and grout. On top of that, it also contains ingredients that can help inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew, and other harmful microorganisms. After we let the cleaner sit for a few minutes to emulsify the grime, we extracted the remaining dirt from the grout lines using a high-speed scrubber. We also used a steam cleaner on the shower's expansion joints and shower floor to ensure any trace of mold was completely removed.

When we finished cleaning, we dried the shower's surfaces to replace the damaged grout. We also made sure the floor's loose tiles were correctly placed before we re-grouted the entire surface. To finish, we sealed the shower's fixtures with ColorSeal. This is an acrylic-based sealant that shuts off the grout's pores and protects it against water, stains, mold, mildew, and other external agents. It also comes in a variety of colors and in this case, the client chose beige to match the color of the tiles.

The results were outstanding. The grout was now clean and uniformly colored. On top of that, the fixtures in the shower were now impervious to most external agents and much easier to maintain. The homeowner thanked us for a fantastic job and assured us she would recommend our services to her friends and family.

Prior to leaving, we gave the customer a few maintenance tips. We first recommended using soap-less, pH-neutral cleaners like our proprietary cleaner to clean the shower. Unlike most store-bought products, our cleaning solution won't damage grout or leave a sticky residue behind. We also advised her to keep the shower enclosure ventilated. This will help prevent mold growth and water seepage.
